Why we give?
Today is the first day of school for most of the kids I know. My son Scot went off to 8th grade in new shoes, new jeans, a new shirt, new underwear and a new backpack to our local middle school that has Smart Boards in every classroom! In our part of the world, we consider this scenario to be normal; we hardly see it as a luxury.

But more than one quarter of the world’s primary-school-age children never attend school because their families are too poor to pay their school fees or purchase the required school uniform. The majority of these children live in sub-Saharan Africa where a shortage of resources, bad government and a lack of political will contribute to this sad state of affairs. Yet throughout the world, primary education continues to be the most powerful weapon against poverty and the education of girls is the single most significant contributor to child survival and the reduction of HIV/AIDS.
